You pick up the controller, the PS5 wakes, the TV comes on. And then you get up to dim the lights, because your living room is still at full brightness. That is exactly the sort of errand your house should be running for you.

The ps5-mqtt add-on gives you local control over your PlayStation 5: you can see whether it is on, in rest mode or off, and you can wake it and put it back to rest. It talks to Home Assistant over MQTT, so you need a broker. If you run Zigbee2MQTT, you already have one.

Installing

  1. Install the ps5-mqtt add-on and link your PSN account, following the add-on's own instructions for the PSN authorisation.
  2. Put your PS5 in rest mode rather than fully off, because rest mode is the only state it can be woken from.
  3. The PS5 appears as a device with a switch (on/rest) and a sensor for activity.

Let HDMI-CEC handle the TV

Enable HDMI Device Link on the PS5 and the CEC feature on your TV; on Samsung sets it is called Anynet+. When the PS5 wakes, the TV jumps to the right HDMI input by itself. Home Assistant then only has to switch the TV on and never has to meddle with inputs.

The gaming mood

Create a "Living room gaming" scene with the lights behind the TV dimmed and the ceiling spots left alone, then tie it to the PS5 waking up. That works in both directions:

  • the PS5 comes on through the controller or the power button, after which the gaming scene starts and the media player goes to sleep;
  • you pick the gaming scene from your dashboard, after which Home Assistant wakes the PS5, unless it is already awake.

Restoring afterwards

Here is the part that really finishes it off. When the PS5 drops into rest mode by itself after you stop playing, put the living room back the way it was. To do that, snapshot the current state when the gaming mood starts:

- action: scene.create
  data:
    scene_id: woonkamer_voor_gaming
    snapshot_entities:
      - light.woonkamer_tv_lampen
      - media_player.woonkamer_tv
      - media_player.woonkamer_apple_tv

When the PS5 goes to rest, activate scene.woonkamer_voor_gaming.

There is one exception, and you really do have to build it in: do not restore when Home Assistant switched the PS5 off itself, through "TV off", "all off" or another scene. Track whether the rest mode came from Home Assistant with an input_boolean and skip the restore in that case. Miss that, and the TV springs back to life at the exact moment you had switched everything off and were heading to bed.

Include it in "all off"

Put the PS5 in your "TV off" and "all off" scripts alongside the TV, the media player and the soundbar. A console that accidentally stays on all night uses more than you would expect from a games machine.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not wake my PS5? Check in the PS5's power settings whether Stay connected to the internet is enabled for rest mode. Without that option the console is unreachable while resting.

Does waking work when the PS5 is fully off? No, only from rest mode. So always put the console into rest rather than off, including in your "all off" script.

What if someone is in the kitchen while a game is on? Let presence across the whole open space count before anything switches off. How to do that is covered in dimming instead of switching off.
