Connecting Gira eNet lighting to Home Assistant

Gira eNet is in a lot of new-build homes. With the eNet Server and a HACS integration you can control those lights and switches from Home Assistant.

You buy a new-build house and behind the wall switches sits Gira eNet: in-wall dimmers and switches that talk wirelessly to an eNet Server in the meter cupboard. Nice system, its own app, and at first glance a closed door as far as Home Assistant is concerned. It is better than that. Your lights pair perfectly well, and you keep your existing switches.

What you need

  • A Gira eNet Server in your meter cupboard, wired to your network and on a fixed IP address.
  • The enet community integration for Home Assistant, through HACS.

Pairing

  1. Add the repository in HACS and install the integration.
  2. Add the integration and enter the address and credentials of the eNet Server.
  3. Each channel appears as a light (dimmable or on/off) or as a switch.

If something does not behave the way you expect and a fix exists that has not been released yet, you can point HACS at your own fork as a custom repository for a while. Do go back to the original repository once the fix is merged there, or in a year you will be quietly stuck on a version nobody recognises.

Names and areas

eNet channels get names per floor and room in the eNet app, and Home Assistant inherits those. After pairing, check that each channel really is in the right area, because your installer made that layout and not you. Wall lights listed under the living room in the app but hanging above the dining table belong to the dining room in Home Assistant.

Not every channel is a light

An eNet channel feeding an outdoor socket or a run of garden lighting is really a power switch. Treat it as one, because otherwise it starts counting towards your light counters and your "all off" scripts:

  • Rename it to what it does, for example "Garden power".
  • Keep it out of your light counters and light popups.
  • Switch it on first before an automation controls the garden lighting attached to it.
  • Switch it back on after a Home Assistant restart if there are lights depending on it.

Combining with Zigbee

Drive Gira spots and Zigbee bulbs in the same room together through scenes in Home Assistant. Your buttons and your dashboard then stop caring which system a light came from, and that is the whole point of this exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need the eNet Server? Yes. The integration talks to the eNet Server rather than to the in-wall modules directly, so without the server there is no connection.

Can I put Gira and Zigbee bulbs in one group? Yes, with a light group in Home Assistant. Light groups or aliases covers when that is useful and when it is not.

Does eNet support smooth dimming? The dimmers do, but not every module handles a transition time. For the lights that can manage it, keep to one standard transition time so the whole thing stays consistent.
