Your robot already vacuums perfectly well on its own schedule, so why pair it at all? Because the app does not know whether you are home, does not know you are in a meeting, and only warns you about a worn-out brush if you go looking in the app yourself. Nobody does that.
Dreame robots are best supported in Home Assistant by the dreame_vacuum community integration from HACS. You sign in with your Dreamehome account and get the robot as a vacuum entity, plus sensors for status, cleaning history and the state of the consumables.
Schedule in the app, control in Home Assistant
Leave the fixed schedule in the Dreame app, vacuuming and mopping on weekdays for instance. Rooms and suction power are easiest to manage there too. Home Assistant adds precisely the things the app cannot do:
- only start when nobody is home;
- stop your house from flipping itself to away while the robot is driving around, because its movement sets your presence sensors going. Or the other way around: do arm it when the robot is running and you know for certain the house is empty;
- a notification the moment it gets stuck, instead of a robot squeaking under the sofa for half a day.
Notifications: only what matters
A robot that sends three messages after every run gets ignored within a week. Stick to three kinds:
- Done: one message in your inbox, with an "Emptied" button for when you have to empty the dirty water tank after mopping.
- Problem: a push straight away, because stuck or a blocked brush does not resolve itself.
- Maintenance: as soon as a consumable is nearly spent.
Keep "done" notifications off your speakers. Your inbox or a briefing is plenty for those.
Maintenance reminders
The integration exposes the remaining life of each consumable as a percentage: main brush, side brush, filter, mop pads and dust bag. One automation covers all of them:
- alias: Robot onderhoud
triggers:
- trigger: numeric_state
entity_id:
- sensor.robot_main_brush_left
- sensor.robot_side_brush_left
- sensor.robot_filter_left
- sensor.robot_dust_bag_left
below: 10
actions:
- action: todo.add_item
target:
entity_id: todo.huishouden
data:
item: 'Robot: {{ trigger.to_state.name }} vervangen'
The actual entity names vary per model, so check them in your device overview before copying this.
An old robot with no app
If you still have an older robot without Wi-Fi, put it on a smart plug. Plug on at 10:00, off at 18:00, and it runs its own schedule while only charging when you let it. Not elegant, but it works.
Frequently asked questions
Is the integration official? No, it is a community integration through HACS. It is actively maintained, but check that everything still does what it did after a Home Assistant update.
Can I clean individual rooms from Home Assistant? Yes. The integration supports room selection using the layout you created in the Dreame app, so you can have just the kitchen done after cooking.
Why does my robot not start when I am out? Then your presence is not reliable enough. Presence with UniFi covers how to combine Wi-Fi and GPS.
